"Return surplus to Albertans," says taxpayers group

Author: John Carpay 2002/06/19
EDMONTON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) responded to today's release of the Alberta Government's 2001-02 Annual Report.

Alberta government program spending rose from $12.77 billion in 1996-97 to $20.21 billion in 2001-02, an increase of 58%. In contrast, Alberta's population grew 10% and Alberta's Consumer Price Index rose 11% during the same five-year period. Alberta's Budget 2002-03, introduced this past March, raised health care premiums and other taxes.

"High spending causes tax increases. Taxpayers know this, but politicians sometimes forget," stated CTF-Alberta director John Carpay. "Alberta was the highest per capita spending province in the country."
